Kingfishers nesting - Alcedo atthis

True to our philosophy that you learn throughout your life, we always look out for new challenges. Sometimes life's surprises are most unexpected. Not least to find a kingfisher nesting at the bottom of your garden.  Especially if you live within 2km of of the centre one of the UK's major industrial cities.  During May bankholiday 2002 it was there.  We watched them build their nest and now its feeding its young.  The challenge is to get some good photos.

Most people count themselves lucky to see the iridescent blue flash of this rare (in the UK) and shy bird. We watch them all day long day after day.

2002 The Story

May 14th, the brook has been in flood with the rain.  The coots nest was washed away and we feared for the Kingfisher.  Bur fear not it has found a now source of food.  Someone is feeding it Goldfish!  This is at least the second we have seen it take.

2004 The Story

We saw them mating one Sunday in April and them they disappeared for the summer up or down the brook, but they have been heard this autumn.  So will they return again next spring?  Come back and find out

Belive it or not the nest is under the 14th fairway and the golfers are blissfully unaware of its existence!
